Saudade

The painting evokes a sense of longing and joy, melancholy and wonder. The central, glowing red hearts speak to love and connection, while the surrounding mist and cooler colors introduce elements of uncertainty, memory, and perhaps a touch of sorrow for memories lost.

Peaceable Catskills

Peaceable Catskills represents a regional adaptation of Edward Hicks’s iconic subject matter translating the concept of universal peace into a specific, idyllic vision of the American wilderness. The inclusion of the young girl as the central, calming force, surrounded by predators that have foresworn their instincts creates a nostalgic vision of coexistence.

Secretive Seven Sisters

East end Molokai from the vantage point of a tropical bird. The composition is defined by strong horizontal layers, transitioning from the deep cerulean open ocean to the turquoise sanctuary of the lagoon behind the barrier reef. The skeletal remains of the historic Kamalo Wharf anchor the viewer’s eye, a reminder of the island’s agricultural past.

Approaching Tutulia

Approaching Tutuila moves beyond traditional maritime portraiture. Instead of focusing on the vessel or the mechanics of sailing the artist, Catherine Buchanan, focuses on the experience of the voyager. The viewer is positioned low on the water, transforming the sea from a mere surface into a living, breathing pattern of light.

An arid desert landscape under an immense, clear blue sky. A plain, solitary house melds with the horizon. foreground and middle, including rounded sagebrush, dry golden grasses, and scattered tumbleweeds rendered in earthy tones of ochre, tan, and dusty green. The perspective is wide and open, emphasizing a sense of profound solitude and the massive scale of the sky relative to the small human dwelling.

Contemporary realist painting of a Auntie Gertie’s Kalaupapa beach house at sunset, featuring palm trees, a glowing interior light, and an adjacent historic cemetery emphasizing the intersection of natural beauty and historical memory in Hawaii.

Kingston Riverbend Twilight

The quiet majesty of the Kingston Point rail trail at dusk. The painting is defined by the use of contrasting color temperatures. Icy, deep blues and purples of the snow-lined foreground push against the fiery amber, crimson, and golden light of the setting sun. From a favorite walk along the Hudson River where the tracks Kingston Riverbend Twilight

Mo’oula Falls

Where Halawa Valley ends. In a deep, remote valley on Molokai, a series of waterfalls cascades in stages from the highest peaks in Kamakou Preserve, winds through the valley floor and ultimately joins the sea. It’s a decent hike to the falls once permission to cross private property has been obtained. As many things in Mo’oula Falls

Molokai Round Up

I found some aspects of the yearly round up difficult to watch, but round ups are a long standing tradition in Hawaii and I was interested in learning about an essentially humane way to raise cattle. I accepted the invitation to spend the day with a wonderful community at work and play. Paniolos on horseback herded Molokai Round Up
